Humbucker & Split-Single Pickups

Humbucker Replacements

Gibson’s classic double coil pickup. The coils are in phase to a guitar amp, but out of phase to the "hum" in the air.

As with all pickups, more turns of wire gives more power, thicker mids and less highs.

* Note:
5% (+) Overwind = 5% More Power, 5% More Mids, but 5% Less Highs
5% (-) Underwind = 5% Less Power, 5% Less Mids, but 5% More Highs

Fralin offer this pickup in Zebra (one black coil and one cream coil) or Double Black. Other options include coil tap or Gibson style braided shield wire and outputs from 7.5 K to 10.0 K. All Fralin humbuckers are wound with 42 Plain Enamel like the old P.A.F.’s.

PAF style humbuckers are available in outputs of: 7.5K, 8K, 8.5K, 9K, 9.5K & 10K. We recommend a stronger bridge pickup with humbucker sets - for example a ‘stock’ set is neck 8K bridge 9K.

The coil tap models are designed to be hum canceling when the tapped humbucker is combined with a Strat reverse middle. (Humb-Single-Humb or Single-Single-Humb). If you want to have a phase reversal switch, you can reverse white and black. Please specify 3 conductor lead if you intend to do this. It is recommended no less than 8k output for coil tapping.

Now available! Wider spaced humbuckers.
Both 50 mm and 52 mm, in white or black, flat foot or deep foot.

High Output Humbucker

More power, Longer sustain and Faster grind. Wound with 43 gauge wire from 12.5K to 13.5K with ALNICO IV magnets. This set taps very well, and also tolerates being turned down on the volume control. Read "Musician's Hotline" review of this pickup here

Pure PAF

Introducing the "Pure PAF". These are wound to 7.5k in the neck position and 8k in the bridge. Fralin hand-weakens the magnets to soften the treble and smooth the grind - The end result is more of Fralin’s renowned incredibly complex and warm tone.

They are clean and articulate with very good note separation. The parts used look like real PAFs and the tone is as close as you can get. These are not recommended for guitars where a coil-tap is needed.

Hum-Cancelling P-90's

This 2 coil pickup has the big midrange and the bright wound strings of the
original P-90's. The stock set sounds the most like real "50's" P-90's. 5%
under makes a very clean set and the 5% over makes a darker set. (the most

favoured is the "Stock" set).

Split Singles - P-92

These are humbuckers in size and shape with adjustable pole pieces, and
they are dead quiet. The sound is pure single coil - very clear & bright wound
strings but a bit thicker than the twangmaster. Similar to under-wound under
p-90 in tone but also fully hum-cancelling.
Note: Covers are required for both P-92’s and Twangmasters.

Split Singles - Twangmaster

The "Twangmaster" is a humbucker size pickup with a very clean almost fender tone, particularly on the wound strings, as you would expect from ALNICO V rods. They use non-adjustable pole pieces and are available with 8,000 to 11,000 turns.
(We recommended Lindy’s favourite set of 8,000 and 9,200 neck and bridge)

Note: Covers are required for both P-92’s and Twangmasters.

Unbucker

In an Unbucker, the screw coil is wound stronger than the slug coil. This makes the pickup sound bright and a little more single coil, but the best reason to do this is for coil tapping. When tapped the stronger coil is active as opposed to half a pickup.

While a typical 8K humbucker would have each coil wound to 4K, an 8K Unbucker would have a 3K coil and a 5K coil. This makes the pickup brighter when coil-tapped and combined with a single coil pickup.
A typical 8K humbucker would have one of its 4K coils combined with the single coil, typically closer to 6K. There is somewhat of a mismatch between the two pickups, with the 4K humbucker coil being thinner sounding than the 6K single coil.
If an 8K Unbucker is used instead of an 8K humbucker, the Unbucker would have its 5K coil combined with the 6K middle pickup. This is a much better match, and more closely approximates the sound of two single coils combined.

The best selling set of these is 7.5K neck (4.5-3) and 8.5 Bridge (5-3.5) 3 conductor lead with a Vintage Hot reverse middle in-between. (Humb.-single-Humb.)

Combining the two coils gives a total ohm reading or approximate output to compare to normal humbuckers.
